Mtito Andei, Kenya
In 2011, Global Roots and our community partners in Mtito Andei, Kenya, worked to expand a multi-faceted initiative aimed at improving children’s well-being through sustainable nutrition, vocational education, and trauma support.

A key milestone was the introduction of on-site gardens with state-of-the-art greenhouses at local institutions, including the Baraka Orphanage, Matangini, and Matulani schools. With the support of generous donors, we successfully set up the first of three greenhouses at the Baraka Orphanage, with local oversight provided by Global Roots’ liaison, James Odaba.

In addition to providing nutritious food, we focused on supporting children living with HIV/AIDS by developing a nutrition program in collaboration with a local nurse. Our service trip in July 2011 aimed to refine this program with the help of volunteers, ensuring it met the needs of the young patients.
To further empower the community, we enlisted a pro bono international landscape architect who designed five bandas (traditional structures) for the Matangini tribe, which were to be built alongside the planned vocational school.
The collaborative spirit of the Mtito Andei community played a crucial role in shaping these initiatives. Their vision for a sustainable and positive future for their children guided our efforts, and Global Roots was proud to support them in bringing this vision to life.
