Laying the Groundwork for Change in Kenya – December 2010

In December 2010, Global Roots embarked on a crucial trip to Kenya to strengthen local partnerships and lay the legal and administrative foundation for the construction of the Kimer-Kamba Vocational School. This initiative, set to begin in early 2011, aimed to provide skills training and economic opportunities for youth who could not attend university.

During this visit, Global Roots volunteer Travis Gearhart met with key political and legal figures in Nairobi to secure support for the project. One lawyer even pledged to assist pro bono, ensuring that all legal agreements were properly drafted and overseen.

In Mtito Andei, Travis worked closely with Leva Wabua, known as “Chairman Leva,” the leader of a community-based organization determined to establish a vocational school and tourism camp. Together, they confirmed land ownership, conducted a survey, and reaffirmed commitments with local leaders and stakeholders. The land, located near Tsavo West National Park, teemed with wildlife, making this initiative not just an educational opportunity but a sustainable ecotourism project for the community.

This trip also reinforced our long-standing partnership with Rosina, a dedicated caregiver for HIV/AIDS orphans in the region. Global Roots had previously helped construct a children’s shelter, library, and office for her network. During this visit, she requested support for connecting electricity to these facilities. Thanks to immediate funding approval from Global Roots headquarters, the children’s shelter was soon powered with electricity—another small but impactful victory for the community.

With all stakeholders aligned and preparations complete, Global Roots was ready to return in February 2011 to begin construction. This successful trip cemented our commitment to sustainable, locally-led development in Kenya.
