Children’s Gardens and Support Projects Metrics
At Global Roots, we measure the success of our children’s gardens and related support projects through thorough evaluation and continuous improvement.
Establishing Children’s Gardens
Needs Assessment:
- A Global Roots representative consults with the school master to evaluate local needs.
- The school is approved, and a local review panel is formed to oversee the children’s garden.
Implementation:
- A greenhouse kit is purchased and constructed by a hired team.
- A local master gardener is employed.
- A chicken coop is built, and chicks are raised.
- Local mothers prepare meals using produce and eggs from the garden and coop for the school lunch program.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Data collection:
- A random sample of students is selected for initial assessment.
- Metrics include school attendance, academic performance, teacher assessments, parental feedback, and physical health.
- Nutritional intake from the garden’s produce is monitored.
Impact measurement:
- Six months after implementation, the sample group is re-evaluated.
- We analyze changes and improvements, sharing results with donors and in the Global Roots annual report.
Continuous improvement:
- A new sample group is selected for the next cycle, allowing us to refine our methods and increase the project’s impact.
This process ensures that our children’s gardens are effective and responsive to the needs of the communities we support.
