Light of Pamir: A Safe Haven for Orphaned Children

In November 2010, Global Roots provided crucial funding to Janagha Jaheed, a dedicated humanitarian in Northern Afghanistan, to lease a home for orphaned and abandoned children in Baharak. The funds arrived just in time, securing shelter before the region’s first winter cold spell.

With the home established, the next priority was raising funds to cover annual running costs. A generous clothing drive at a high school in Beaverton, Oregon, resulted in the collection of two tons of clothing and one ton of children’s books. The U.S. Air Force offered transportation support for these much-needed supplies.

To further strengthen the initiative, Global Roots sent a volunteer in the spring of 2011 to assess the project and provide additional support to Janagha’s team. Encouragingly, other Afghan communities expressed interest in replicating this model to establish similar homes for vulnerable children.

Fundraising Overview:

  • Funds raised in 2010: $22,000
  • Funds raised in early 2011: $8,000

Global Roots remains committed to supporting Baharak’s most vulnerable children, ensuring they have a safe and nurturing environment to grow and thrive.
