Vocational Tailoring Training
The Vocational School Project, also known as the “Tailoring Skills Training for Women and Young Girls,” was a social, educational, and professional initiative financially supported by Global Roots. Implemented in the Baharak district of Badakhshan province, Afghanistan, the project provided tailoring skills training over six months to vulnerable women and girls facing socio-economic challenges due to conflict and restrictive policies.
The goal of the projects was to empower women and young girls by providing tailoring skills for sustainable income and self-sufficiency.
Objectives and Outcomes
- The project provided market-based income-generating opportunities.
- It supported girls at risk of early marriage or domestic violence.
- Job opportunities were created for female trainers and participants.
- The project encouraged the use of locally produced clothes and handcrafts.
- It aimed to reduce the prevalence of early marriages and child labor.
Project Activities and Achievements (September – November 2023)
- Three local female tailors were hired as trainers.
- Sixty young girls and women from 19 villages were trained.
- Sewing machines, desks, and training materials were provided.
- The project completed 50% of the tailoring curriculum.
- Trainees produced and sold various clothing items.
- The program facilitated social interaction among participants.
An M&E officer monitored the project’s progress, with monthly reports shared for transparency.
Conclusion
The vocational school project empowered women and young girls in Baharak district by providing them with valuable skills and livelihood opportunities. The project highlighted the resilience and determination of the participants, offering hope and a pathway to self-sufficiency.
